Instead of Government practical support for public hospitals, patients are still being sent to the private sector

Statement by Stefanos Stefanou, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 24th December 2016, Nicosia

econ soc healthThe mass exodus of doctors from public hospitals is continuing. Another three doctors have left, and the total number of those who have left public hospitals has risen to several dozen. This fact further deteriorates the already poor situation in public hospitals which cannot meet people’s needs, resulting in patient’s suffering growing.

The Anastasiades – DISY party government is proven to be incapable of coping with the whole situation. Instead of providing practical support to public hospitals, it is continuing to send patients to the private sector where as doctors working in this sector are denouncing, care of dubious quality is being offered.

The government itself continues to dither on the implementation of the General Health Scheme. Issues which were agreed between the government and the political parties, which until now were considered closed, are re-opening due to the confrontation that seems to exist between the Health Ministry and the Ministry of Finance.

This situation is unacceptable and disastrous for the public health system. The government’s responsibility for the situation is grave. People want action and not just promises which the government and ruling forces are making at every opportunity and which in the end prove to be meaningless.
