History cannot be erased! Anastasiades government decision an insult to the history of Cyprus and the heroes of Democracy

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 11th March 2016, Nicosia

cp - praksikopimaThe decision taken by the Anastasiades government to fund the construction of a monument for the commandos who were killed attacking the Presidential Palace on the day of the coup d’état of 15th July 1974 is not only an erroneous and divisive action. It is an insult to the history of Cyprus and to the heroes of Democracy. It conveys the worst possible message that can be sent, in the midst of the effort underway for a solution and the reunification of our country and people.

It has yet again been proved that the government of DISY party is not only seeking the paying of religious tributes to those who died supposedly “carrying out orders”, as they have been suggesting for years. Their goal is to honour politically the coup d’état and to justify and vindicate the coup itself. Their decision follows the memorial services in honour of Grivas, Sampson and Georghadjis, the building of statues for the coupists, the equation of the late President Makarios with the devastator of Cyprus Grivas, the promotion of the formulas of historical revisionism through which they are attempting to pardon and exonerate the Americans and NATO for the double crime of the coup d’état and Turkish invasion they committed in 1974.

DISY and its government think that time has faded the memory and conscience of our people about the treason and betrayal that was committed in 1974. They believe that now is the time to continue the distortion and revision of Cyprus History which they began during the decade of their governance from 1993 to 2003. They are deluding themselves if they think they will not face resistance.

AKEL calls on every democrat to take part in the protest meeting organized by the All-Cyprus Association of Democratic Resistance Fighters, tomorrow Saturday 11:00 a.m. at the Constantine and Eleni Cemetery.

History cannot be erased!
