9 February 2022

“AKEL sadly bids farewell to the historic militant of the Party, comrade Angelos Kazantzis, who passed away today,” notes a relevant statement by AKEL Paphos District Organisation.

Angelos Kazantzis was born in 1940 in the village of Kissonerga and linked his whole life with AKEL and the struggles of the People’s Movement of the Left, marking his path of struggle with selfless dedication and faith in the ideals of the Left and the rights of the working people and our country.

He was organized from very early within the ranks of the youth movement and the school student’s organization of PEOM. He was arrested and imprisoned by the British colonialists in 1956 for his political convictions and activities.

In 1960 he became a full-time militant of the EDON Youth Organisation in the Paphos district and was EDON District Secretary until 1974. He served as a full-time official of AKEL, while for years he was a member of both the Central, but also the District Committees of the Party, serving the People’s Movement of the Left from various positions of responsibility.

He defended democracy and the constitutional order/legality during the period of the illegal armed activities of EOKA B and participated actively in the resistance against the treasonous fascist coup of 15 July 1974.

He resolutely defended the territorial integrity of our country during the Turkish army invasion. Until the end of his life he remained an active and dedicated member of AKEL.

AKEL honours Angelos Kazantzis with respect and gratitude for his selfless contribution to the people and the homeland. It expresses its sincere condolences to the family of our dear comrade.

The funeral of the late Angelos Kazantzis will take place on Friday 11 February 2022 at 2 pm at the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior in Kissonerga.”
