The government’s sole aim is to sell off Cooperatives to private capital

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C Press Office, 18th December 2015, Nicosia

sell off econThe decisions taken to deliver the Cooperative movement into private hands are the culmination of the scheming of the Anastasiades-DISY party government throughout this whole previous period. As the principal shareholder of the Central Cooperative Bank, the government has failed miserably to defend the interests of the Cooperative Movement’s members, since its sole aim was the sellout of Cooperatives to private capital.

The government and ruling forces have once again been left irreparably exposed before the Cypriot people, given that they bear the sole responsibility for these most negative developments in the Cooperative movement and the economy; developments which have merely reconfirmed tragically the fiasco of the Memorandum program and the government’s supposed “success story”.

The Cooperative movement, as in the past, has to play a substantial role in supporting society and in the development of the Cyprus economy. It is the biggest investment of the State, which is why AKEL will not tolerate any actions to sell it off to private capital.
