Government consistent only in its dogmatic obsession to privatize profitable semi-governmental organizations
Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 29th December 2015, Nicosia
The government’s handling of the privatization of the Semi-governmental organization Cyprus Electricity Authority (CEA) remains contradictory and inconsistent. Indirectly or directly, the Anastasiades-DISY party Government is consistent only in its dogmatic obsession to privatize the profitable Semi-governmental organizations, while simultaneously it is continuing to shift the burden of the private banks losses on to the people.
Neither the European acquis communautaire, nor the Third Energy Package imposes the separation of the ownership of EAC. Nor is there any reliable well-documented evidence demonstrating the necessity or usefulness of such a separation. Moreover, neither is there a study indicating any benefit for any society to justify the surrender of the EAC to large private interests and its transformation into a private monopoly.
On the contrary, international and European experience, as well as Cyprus’ peculiarities as a small, isolated and semi-occupied country, demands that the existing Public character of EAC is maintained. All that is said to the contrary are merely lame excuses of the government and ruling forces, which sooner or later will be held accountable.
