Government inaction, high prices for essential goods such as water and energy

10 November 2025, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The imminent increase in the price of water, following the already high cost of electricity in Cyprus, does not seem to concern the government. Inflation, government incompetence, and delays in vitally important projects are creating a dangerous situation.

The government continues to burden citizens with the consequences of its inadequate policies with dangerous indifference. After the expensive price of electricity, now comes even more expensive prices for water, the result of its erroneous policies and complete indifference it demonstrates to citizens, businessmen, farmers, and the environment.

Desalination plants in Cyprus burn fuel oil, resulting in the price of desalinated water being very high, unlike other countries that pay much less.

Water is a public commodity, and as such, the given government has a duty to safeguard it. The Christodoulides government is proving itself incapable of dealing with problems on a daily basis, let alone the problem of water scarcity.

The list of unfinished projects is long, and the mismanagement of water resources over the past decade has brought us to this critical situation.

The government must immediately:

  • Proceed with the transition of desalination plants to renewable energy sources and modern, energy-efficient technologies.
  • Ensure that the price of desalinated water will not increase.
  • Proceed with the immediate implementation of projects that will reduce water losses and enable the utilization of every drop of water available.

Water is not a privilege, it is a right, and the state has an obligation to ensure this. The responsibility lies with the government.
