Government aversion to combating tax evasion

Statement by Stefanos Stefanou, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 1st August 2016, Nicosia

econThe government and ruling forces are still showing a stand of aversion when dealing with the investigation of issues relating to tax evasion.

This time they are called upon to give a reply to the following question: why didn’t they respond to the readiness which the creator of the Lagarde list showed to give more information on Cypriot tax evaders?

We do not expect that the government will give satisfactory answers. Whenever there is any mention of tax evasion and banking scandals it is usually content with evasive and vague statements. That’s how they behave regarding the issue of the outflows of deposits during the period when banks were closed or with regards the taxation of certain individuals who are on the Lagarde list.

With their whole behavior, the government and ruling forces have convinced us that they evidently want to cover up certain circles and forces speculating against taxpayers who are paying the cost of the economic crisis, but also for the austerity policy being implemented by the Anastasiadies – DYSI Government.
