General Secretary of AKEL Congratulates to Sinn Fein for the great success it has achieved in the snap elections for the Assembly in northern Ireland

To: Gerry Adams, President of Sinn Fein

Sinn Féin LogoDear Gerry Adams,

On behalf of the Central Committee of AKEL I warmly congratulate Sinn Fein, its members and militants for the great success it has achieved in the snap elections for the Assembly in northern Ireland. Sinn Fein’s significant increase in electoral strength and the diminishing of the gap from the first party assumes even greater importance given the substantial increase in the popular participation in the elections.

The result is a confirmation of Sinn Fein’s policy and struggles for the reunification of Ireland, based on your consistent and courageous stance for the overcoming of the dividing lines and conflicts of the past. It is based on your struggles against austerity recipes and privatizations, for alternative economic and social policies focused on the common people’s needs. It is in addition based on your steadfast position for combating corruption. Furthermore, your success inspires optimism more broadly among the forces struggling for the national sovereignty and independence of their countries.

AKEL highly appreciates Sinn Fein’s consistent solidarity towards the struggle for the reunification of Cyprus and its people, as it indeed your party does towards other struggling peoples all over of the world.

On this occasion, AKEL addresses a warm greeting to the leadership, members and friends of Sinn Fein and expresses its will to continue the high level of relations of mutual respect and understanding between our parties, both on a bilateral level and within the framework of the Confederal Group of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left in the European Parliament. We wish progress and successes to Sinn Fein so that it continues to make a decisive contribution to the process for the full implementation of the Good Friday Agreement and the reunification of Ireland, in the struggle for social progress and the prosperity of the Irish people.

In solidarity,

Andros Kyprianou

General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL
