EU’s hypocrisy and selective “sensitivities” on Ukraine

Statement by Stefanos Stefanou, member of the Political Bureau of AKEL

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 28th January 2015, Nicosia

ukraine euThe Cyprus government must assist and support the stand of the newly elected Greek government in relation to the imposition of additional EU sanctions on Russia.

The issue is not only procedural; it is above all a matter of substance. The Russian Federation is an important country for Cyprus. The support it gives to Cyprus is manifold and the Cyprus government must at last protect our country’s vital interests by following a corresponding position within the EU.

The European Union’s hastiness to plan the promotion of new measures against Russia, violating even its own rules of functioning, once again highlights the hypocrisy and selective “sensitivities” of Brussels. On the question of Ukraine the European Union supports even neo-Nazi organizations so as to harm Russia, while with regards Turkey’s illegal acts against one of the Union’s Member States – namely Cyprus – it does not take any stand.

The European Union’s credibility has fallen to the lowest point as a result of the policies Brussels is pursuing.
