Espionage activities in the Middle East through Cyprus

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 7th July 2014, Nicosia

Press reports refer to Israel’s interest in using strategic points in the Republic of Cyprus for conducting espionage activities in the Middle East.

As AKEL, we believe that these reports raise various questions:

If the reports are true what is the government’s position? Does the government consider that it is in the interests of Cyprus to enhance rather than reduce the foreign military and espionage presence in Cyprus? Does the Government understand the need to maintain delicate balances affecting the Arab world, by avoiding actions which will be considered as hostile towards it? Does the government recognize the dangers for the people of Cyprus from the increasing presence of foreign forces in our country, especially at a time when the Middle East is ablaze with wars and interventions?

We await the official response of the government.
