DISY-Anastasiades government dramatically worsening people’s daily life

Statement by the Head of the Economic Research Bureau of AKEL Haris Polycarpou on the housing problem

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 30th September 2019, Nicosia

It is clear that the DISY-Anastasiades Government neither understands the problems of today’s society, nor does it want to. At the same time as the economy – according to the government – is on a rolling “success story”, more and more households are struggling with their housing problems.

According to recent data released by the European Statistical Office, the percentage of households who own their own home is falling year by year, while the percentage of households who are paying rent in Cyprus is increasing accordingly.

By dogmatically following a one-dimensional development model based on the industry of selling luxury housing, the government has dramatically worsened people’s daily lives. With higher rents and rising prices for buying a house, the essential dismantling of the State’s housing policy and the persistence in pursuing an economic policy that has led to a reduction in working people’s incomes have made housing an expensive privilege instead of a social right for all.
