DIKO President judges others by his own standards and behaviour

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 4th April 2016, Nicosia

diko_1We regret that DIKO President Nicholas Papadopoulos, judging others by his own standards and behaviour, is again discovering supposed covert and overt relationships and collusions of AKEL with the governing DISY party. Those forces that had elected DISY into power, those who stubbornly refuse to renounce the repetition of such electoral alliances with it in the immediate future have the nerve to spread innuendos about AKEL. Those forces that hand in hand with DISY have been acting for five years as advocates, literally and figuratively, of the economic ruling class and the banks, shifting the burden of the robbery committed by the banks on the backs of the middle and low-income strata, also have the nerve to demand explanations from AKEL because it strongly resisted their policy which led and indeed is leading to our people’s impoverishment and to the socially unjust distribution of burdens.

Those forces whose positions anything but demonstrate commitment to the strategic goal of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federal solution and to the unanimous decisions of September 2009, those forces who identified themselves with the government policy of maximalist rhetoric on the Cyprus problem, which allowed the Turkish vessel “Barbaros” to roam undisturbed in the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus  and at the same time as we had the worst report submitted over many years by the UN, have the sheer audacity to talk about expediencies with regards AKEL and its supposed retreat from the agreed positions of principles.

AKEL, issues a warning in all directions that it will remain steadfast and consistent to its positions on the Cyprus problem which have been vindicated by life itself, refusing to accept a half Cyprus, occupied and partitioned. All those who agree with us are of course welcome on this responsible stand based on principles.
