Cyprus must become a bridge of peace and cooperation, not an aggressive launching pad or a training ground for foreign armies

21 June 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

AKEL’s position is that our country’s foreign policy must be based on international law, the defence of peace and cooperation with all states, especially in the neighbourhood of the Eastern Mediterranean, far from any logic of militarisation and geopolitical alliances.

Cyprus must become a bridge of peace and cooperation and not an aggressive launching pad or a training ground for foreign armies. The goal of Cyprus’ struggle is to get rid of the foreign armies from our island, not to burden us with more of them. Every foreign military presence on our island does not add security for our people, but dangers and enemies.

Today, when Israel’s genocide against the Palestinians is ongoing and the Netanyahu government is seeking to expand the war to the entire region, Cyprus has a duty and an interest in not having any kind of involvement whatsoever in the warmongering plans of the Israeli government and its allies. On the contrary, it is necessary for the Republic of Cyprus to join its voice with the UN and those European states that are demanding an end to the genocide and bloodshed in Gaza and for a final peace with a solution to the Palestinian issue on the basis of the Resolutions of the UN.

A firm stance is demanded on the part of the Republic of Cyprus towards the UK government in relation to the involvement of the British bases in Israel’s military operations, which increases the dangers for our people. This is precisely what the security of our country and people, international law, but also basic moral principles towards the Palestinian people, who are being slaughtered, demands.
