Cyprus’ energy future should be determined through the Cyprus Electricity Authority (AHK)

6 June 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

A delegation of AKEL headed by the Party’s Parliamentary Representative Giorgos Loukaides and Political Bureau member Neoklis Sylikiotis visited the headquarters of the semi-governmental organisation Cyprus Electricity Authority (AHK).

In a meeting with the employees and delegations of the trade union organisations, the immediate need to fill the vacancies in AHK both in technical staff and in managerial positions was discussed. In addition, the issue of the implementation of the agreements with the employees of AHK was raised, on which so far, despite pressure from the trade unions, no progress has been made.

In a meeting with members of the Board of Directors, AKEL’s support for the organisation to continue its course as a public entity was stressed, but at the same time, concerns were expressed about the continuous increase in the price of electricity amid a wave of price rises that is rocking Cypriot society.

Regarding the AHK facilities in Dhekelia, both AKEL and the Chairman of the Board of AHK, Giorgos Petrou, agreed that they belong to AHK, and that the upgrading of the infrastructures and facilities is a one-way street for the development of AHK.

As for the terminal in Vasilikos, G. Loukaides made it clear that the government must abandon its incompetent handlings and move forward with immediate solutions so that the project is completed as soon as possible, with the aim of using natural gas for power generation purposes, reducing the hundreds of millions of euros that we forced to pay as an economy and society in pollutants.

Finally, on behalf of AKEL, the urgent need for AHK to penetrate further into the increase of electricity generation through renewable energy sources was pointed out, but also to go a step further, investing with a comprehensive plan, the development of networks and alternatives in a centralised energy storage, which will provide consumers with reserve energy power.
