Christofias- Talat convergences an important asset for a solution based on principles
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 30th July 2015, Nicosia
Yesterday’s resolution renewing the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) is judged as being generally balanced. The resumption of the negotiations has created conditions of cautious optimism, a fact that is reflected both in the preamble, as well as the main text of the resolution.
As AKEL, we also point out the reaffirmation of the previous resolutions of the UN Security Council, including resolution 1251 (1999) and 2026 (2011). We welcome the fact that in this way the UN Security Council recalls the need to respect International Law and the agreed principles of the solution of the Cyprus problem, such as demilitarization.
The need for a speedy as possible solution to the Cyprus problem on the basis of principles, as the resolution notes, presupposes the achievement of substantive, workable and viable convergences on all the key negotiating chapters. We therefore want to remind once again the importance of utilizing the acquis of the Christofias- Talat convergences which, as it is being demonstrated daily, constitute an important asset for the comprehensive solution of our national problem based on principles.
