Britain’s positions encourage Turkey’s partitionist plans

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Press Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 22nd January 2015, Nicosia

britain uk interAKEL considers as unacceptable the position of the British government concerning the alleged isolation of the Turkish Cypriots, for an easing of the so-called embargo against them and its support to the regulation for direct trade with the occupied areas, as expressed in a written reply given by the UK Foreign Minister Baroness Anelay to a relevant question put by Lord Maginnis.

This position supported by London continues to provocatively ignore the fact that the position of the Turkish Cypriots is due exclusively to the on-going occupation and violation of International Law on the part of Turkey.

The tackling of the issues beirehensive solution of the Cyprus problem based on principles.

If therefore London – as it claims – is continuing to seek the solution of the Cyprus problem, this is precisely where its policy must be focused on and not on making statements such as this, which encourage the partition plans of Turkey.

In any case, the United Kingdom’s position should represent yet another point of reflection for the government and ruling forces, who have invested so much on their “strategic partners”, pinning the hopes of Cyprus’ foreign policy on the British and Americans, on the Western powers.
