When Will the Christodoulides Government Provide Solutions to the Energy Crisis?
Statement by Haris Polycarpou, member of the Political Bureau of AKEL and Head of Economic Policy
11 July 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The country is sending out a warning signal about electricity supply, but the government of Nikos Christodoulides continues its criminal inaction in the face of the danger that the country will be left without electricity in 2030 due to European Union requirements, which will take half of the existing conventional electricity generation capacity offline.
The government must at long last provide convincing answers.
Does it have a plan to address the danger of the country running out of electricity by 2030, or will the government and the Minister of Energy continue to merely make observations?
Does it have a plan to address the exorbitantly high cost of electricity, or will society continue to foot the bill?
The situation has reached a breaking point, and the country needs solutions now. That is why AKEL proposes the following:
First, the establishment of an Energy Security and Sufficiency Council to evaluate all available options so as to ensure sufficient electricity generation.
Second, accelerating the introduction of storage for renewable energy generation to increase energy supply, and upgrading energy infrastructures—such as buildings—to reduce energy demand, thereby limiting the shortfall that will arise in electricity generation.
Third, the implementation of measures to reduce electricity costs through a permanent reduction of the VAT on electricity to 5%, the expansion of social bill programs, and making use of revenues from emissions charges for subsidies.
How much longer will the government continue to hide, leaving society at the mercy of powerful economic interests and the energy sector?
