Authoritarianism, arrogance, interwoven interests and conflict of interest by the Government

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou on the President’s interview with “Politis” newspaper

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 11th January 2021, Nicosia

The President’s interview yesterday with “Politis” newspaper confirms that the Anastasiades government reeks everywhere of authoritarianism, arrogance, interwoven interests and conflict of interest.

The President’s interview reaffirmed that the government ruling forces are not concerned about the problem of conflict of interest over the “golden passports” scheme.

In the interview, the President stated that “if it wanted to, the government could have intervened before the investigating authorities them to present a case, which would not justify prosecution by the Attorney General.”

Once again, either the President failed to say what he wanted or he unwittingly confessed the truth about the practices his government is resorting to.

Citizens are wondering in bewilderment:

Is this how the investigation is being carried out in our country?

Can the President and the government intervene in the investigation procedure?

In truth, where else have the government ruling forces intervened?
