AKEL stands with the people of culture

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 11th January 2021, Nicosia

The General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL A.Kyprianou had a meeting with the actor Costas Vihas and Andreas Chrysanthou, President of the “Culture Movement”, within the framework of the actions AKEL is taking to provide support to all those employed in the field of Culture. At the meeting, Andros Kyprianou expressed AKEL’s support for the initiatives undertaken by Costas Vihas and the “Yellow Line of Help and Solidarity”, as well as of the “Culture Movement”, to provide help to artists-creators who face serious financial problems. These problems have been exacerbated by the decisions taken to confront the Covid-19 pandemic, but primarily by the absence of effective government support measures.

Taking into account the new conditions, a discussion took place about the need for cultural activity to continue and on the government’s decision-making that must aim at promoting new actions and effectively utilizing art workers employed in the field of Culture. AKEL will submit a new package of proposals that will be addressed to all those who have the authority to provide substantial support for cultural actions. Our proposals will first and foremost be addressed to the government, which has the primary responsibility, but also possibility of taking effective support measures.

As a minimal expression of AKEL’s practical support for the initiatives undertaken by the actor Costas Vihas, the “Yellow Line of Help and Solidarity” and the “Culture Movement”, the General Secretary of AKEL handed over the amount of 2,000 Euros to each Organization.
