Another milestone on the Cyprus problem has passed without any progress being recorded

Statements by the General Secretary of AKEL S.Stefanou:

Let us safeguard the negotiation aquis

The fact that the UN Secretary General’s personal envoy on Cyprus Ms Olgin has announced her visit to Cyprus in October indicates that the United Nations will make yet another effort on the Cyprus problem, which is why we must strive to safeguard the negotiation acquis; as the Personal Envoy has indicated, the text of the convergences on the Cyprus problem is ready, said the General Secretary of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou on Astra radio morning program.

Unfortunately, S.Stefanou said, the sand in the Secretary-General’s hourglass is running out, as his term ends in December, and it is unclear what the future holds with a new UN Secretary-General once Mr Guterres – who is very familiar with the Cyprus problem – steps down.

The General Secretary of AKEL noted that yet another milestone has passed regarding the Cyprus problem without any progress being registered. When asked, he said that the political leadership is ignoring both the 19 proposals that President Christodoulides announced he had tabled, as well  as what was discussed in New York.

S.Stefanou pointed out that, apart from the EU-Turkey issues which Turkey is interested  and not just on energy, not only have we failed to make use of this, but at times the government takes actions that worsen the atmosphere.

Furthermore, he said that the way the government is also handling its relations with Israel, offers everything to Israel..
