AKEL on the outcome of the President of the Republic’s visit to the UN General Assembly

President Christodoulides’ trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly and his meetings there have ended, unfortunately, without any progress on the Cyprus problem being recorded, despite the expectations raised by the President and leading members of his government.

It was not possible to achieve developments that would break the deadlock and resume negotiations, despite the efforts made by the United Nations Secretary-General. At the same time, Turkey has reiterated the unacceptable positions it has been expressing since the collapse of the procedure at Crans-Montana.

Regardless of the difficulties that exist – and which are compounded by Ankara’s unacceptable rhetoric – we must continue our efforts to return to the negotiating table and resume negotiations from the point at which they were suspended in 2017, whilst safeguarding the negotiating achievements and the areas of convergence that have been reached.

AKEL has tabled a specific proposal on how we can take the next steps on the basis of a positive agenda, so as to create momentum for a return to negotiations with the aim of solving the Cyprus problem within the agreed framework. The fact that the United Nations has documented the convergences that have been registered is significant and this has been AKEL’s consistent position. Of course, this effort must continue with the submission of the convergences document to both sides. This would allow for an effective and speedy procedure to resolve the outstanding issues and would pave the way for a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem.

The solution of the Cyprus problem and the reunification of our country and people is, and will remain, an unwavering objective for AKEL, and we shall continue to work with all our forces to achieve it.
