Another government myth on the economy disproved

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 5th May 2015, Nicosia

memorandum 2 econAs AKEL we are not gloating but it appears that neither the figures are prospering, or the people. Unfortunately the Government all through this recent period sought to paint a glorified picture of the real situation that exists in the Cyprus economy. However, the European Commission’s statement about a continuation of the recession in 2015 too disproves yet another government communication myth.

We of course did not expect the statement of the European Commission to declare our position. AKEL has repeatedly said that the policies of austerity and bloody cuts, the reduction in public investment and the sell-off of public wealth and assets, to which the Government remains fixed on, do not help the country return to growth.

It is wiser for the Government, instead of boasting about fiscal cushions and the country’s entry into the markets, to focus on the effort to exit the country and society from the on-going crisis.
