Anniversary of the assassination of Misiaoulis-Kavazoglou
Statement by the General Secretary of AKEL A.Kyprianou
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 11th April 2020, Nicosia
On Dervis Ali Kavazoglou
Today we commemorate the anniversary of the assassination of the two heroes and martyrs of the friendship and brother hood of our people, Dervis Ali Kavazoglou and Costas Misiaoulis, with the symbolic presence of the leadership of AKEL at their graves. This year we lay our wreath in honor of their sacrifice on behalf of the hundreds who gather every year in Dali to commemorate their sacrifice.
We are sure that the thoughts of every Cypriot patriot who loves his/her homeland and peace are with us. It is right here. And Dervis Ali Kavazoglou is waiting with us as soon as this ordeal is over, to devote all our energies in the mass struggle for the salvation of Cyprus.
Dervis Ali Kavazoglou fell victim to imperialism and nationalism who believed that by assassinating him they would be getting rid once and for all with the struggles waged by AKEL and the mass organisations of the Left to keep Cyprus united, independent and sovereign. But they failed. They failed because they could not envisage that his life, struggle and final embrace with Kostas Misiaoulis trenched in blood would become a banner for the entire Cypriot people who is continuing the struggle for the liberation and reunification of our country.
This is the vow we make in his memory. We shall continue his struggle, all together, united and determined in the struggle for a federal Cyprus, the common homeland of all its children. We will continue the struggle for another Cyprus, for another tomorrow, the future of peace and socialism.
On Costas Misiaoulis
Today we honor the memory of Costas Misiaoulis, the comrade who sacrificed his life in the struggle for Cyprus, together with Dervis Ali Kavazoglou, murdered by the bullets of the Turkish Cypriot nationalist organisation TMT. Their assassination, instead of frightening the people, as the murderers had hoped, made it refuse to yield. It inspired the people to continue the struggle for peace and brotherhood in Cyprus.
Costas Misiaoulis was a cadre of both AKEL and the class-based trade union federation of PEO. A comrade who was always in the frontline of the struggle fulfilling his task. He took the path of struggle, the struggle for Cyprus and joined the thousands of AKEL members, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, fighting with them for the future of Cyprus and its people.
He devoted his whole life to this cause. His murder on the path of this struggle, together with Dervis Ali Kavazoglou, identified his name forever with the struggle for the unity of the Cypriot people against nationalism and chauvinism, against the illegal plans that were being elaborated, both inside and outside Cyprus.
Honoring the memory of Costas Misiaoulis and the sacrifice of the two heroes and martyrs of our people, we insist on raising the banner of peace and unity of our people even higher, to enhance our determination to fight so that we can tear down the barbed wire dividing our country, to deliver to the future generations a free, federal, demilitarized, sovereign and independent Cyprus.
