AKEL will never compromise with the partitionist status quo, nor with two-state solutions

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 10th April 2020, Nicosia

Today marks 55 years since the cowardly assassination of the member of the Central Committee of AKEL Dervis Ali Kavazoglou and the cadre of AKEL and the class-based trade union federation of PEO Kostas Misiaoulis by the Turkish Cypriot chauvinist extreme right. Their assassination was an attempt to attack the very idea of an independent Cyprus, the common homeland of all its children, so that the plans for the partition of our island and its control and subjugation by NATO could proceed. At the same time, it was an attempt to strike a heavy blow against AKEL as the force that unites Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots in the struggles for the homeland and working people’s rights.

The situation as it has evolved today due to the coronavirus pandemic does not permit the holding of mass events this year, as AKEL and the mass organisations of the Left hold every year to honor the sacrifice of the two heroes and martyrs. However, the memory and honor of their sacrifice remains alive because History has made it a banner for the common struggle of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots for the freedom and independence of their common homeland.

AKEL and the mass organisations of the Left of Cyprus, together with every democrat and patriot of our country, honor in practice the memory of Kavazoglou and Misiaoulis, strengthening the struggle against the occupation and division of our homeland. For the freedom and reunification of our country and people. For the rapprochement and friendship of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. For peace.

The pandemic may have displaced all other issues from the public debate, including the Cyprus problem as well, nevertheless it must not be overlooked that our country continues to face Turkey’s aggression, 45 years of occupation and division, in combination with the dangerous stalemate on the Cyprus problem that harbors innumerable dangers.

AKEL reaffirms that it will remain unwaveringly consistent to the irrevocable goal which is the liberation and reunification of our homeland and people on the basis of the solution of bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality as described in the relevant UN Resolutions. AKEL will never compromise with the partitionist status quo, nor with two-state solutions.
