Anastasiades’ handling of the Cyprus problem, judging by the end result, has failed miserably

Statement by Aristos Damianou, Member of the Political Bureau of AKEL, MP, on Mr. Anastasiades’ handlings on the Cyprus problem

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 30th September 2017, Nicosia

At the same time as Turkish intransigence is growing and the prospect of the solution of the Cyprus problem is becoming distant, instead of Mr. Anastasiades reflecting on matters, his main concern is unfortunately his re-election to the presidential post. With his regressions and experimentations he is the President that has participated in two Conferences on Cyprus within a year and failed to expose Turkish intransigence. At Crans Montana, he missed the opportunity to abolish the guarantees and rights of intervention and to also discuss secure mechanisms for the implementation of the solution which the UN Secretary-General proposed.

It is crystal clear that Mr. Anastasiades cannot handle the Cyprus problem with steadfastness and credibility. Despite the attempt by the presidential palace and the governing DISY party to create an impression of success on the Cyprus problem, the bitter truth is that even the UN Secretary-General hasn’t been convinced that he can at this moment undertake the initiative with a chance of success. Unfortunately for the country, Mr. Anastasiades’ handling on the Cyprus problem, judging by the end result, has failed miserably.

If the content of the draft of the UN Secretary-General’s report is confirmed, then this means that Antonio Guterres takes away any argument put forth by Mr. Anastasiades.
