Anastasiades-DISY government continue attempts to distort history and pardon Grivas and EOKA B

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 25th January 2016, Nicosia

grivas cprNo self-respecting state can honor people that have played a decisive role in national disasters and tragedies.

Yet the Anastasiades-DISY party government continues to honor the memory of Grivas: the person that bears the gravest responsibilities for the tragedy that Cyprus has experienced the consequences of which our people are still suffering from.

DISY party has always tried to distort history and pardon and exonerate EOKA B and its leader of the grave responsibilities it has for the Turkish invasion and occupation.

From the very day DISY elected Mr. Anastasiades to the Presidency of the Republic its attempt to falsify and distort history and pardon Grivas and EOKA B has intensified and been upgraded. Apart from the memorial service of Grivas, the government and ruling forces included in school programs visits to the hideout from where Grivas directed the illegal and criminal EOKA B armed organization, while simultaneously promoting and supporting the building of a monument to the commandos who attacked the Presidential Palace in the coup d’état.

This policy of the government and ruling forces is an insult to the memory of all those who gave their lives in defense of democracy and the independence of our homeland. It provokes the democratic sentiments of our people who since 1974 are waging a struggle for survival against the occupation faits accomplis.

We condemn with all the force of our soul the policy of acquitting and pardoning the crime committed against our people by Grivas and his followers, which the government and ruling forces are pursuing.

AKEL will continue to defend the historical truth and resist the attempt to acquit and pardon the coup d’état and Grivas by the government and DISY party.
