AKEL’s support towards animal welfare organisations is long standing

4 October 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The General Secretary of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou, heading a party delegation, paid a visit today to the “Saving Pound Dogs Cyprus-SPDC” animal shelter located in Tseri on the occasion of World Animal Day.  Making a symbolic contribution on behalf of AKEL for the shelter that hosts many stray animals, the General Secretary of AKEL stressed the party’s long-standing support for organisations whose actions cover all those gaps and deficiencies in government policy in relation to animal welfare and protection.

Noting that in our country in recent years the phenomenon of the abandonment and abuse of animals has seen a big increase, Stefanos Stefanou stressed that stricter measures and scrutiny are needed, as well as actions to raise awareness among citizens.

The General Secretary of AKEL thanked the volunteers who contribute with their meagre means to the whole effort for the protection and welfare of animals.

The AKEL delegation was accompanied during the visit to the shelter by Dinos Ayomamitis, President of the non-governmental organisation “Voice for the Animals of Cyprus”.
