AKEL’s Christmas Message

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 25th December 2016, Nicosia

akel bchristmasOn the occasion of Christmas, AKEL addresses to the people of Cyprus as a whole its warm wishes for the New Year, for prosperity, health and happiness.

We address warm greetings to every family and home in Cyprus. Our thoughts are especially with the thousands of poor and unemployed, the vulnerable groups of the population and to all those experiencing job insecurity and the negative consequences as a result of the reduction in their salaries; to the young people who are worried about their future and in general to all those going through hard and difficult times. Unfortunately, the numbers of these people are growing continuously because of the austerity policies being imposed and the dismantling of the welfare state being implemented by the government.

To all our compatriots, but also to all the immigrants hosted in our country and who are apart from their families, we want to send a message of solidarity and struggle, but also of hope.

These days our thoughts turn to our compatriots that have been marked by the tragic events of 1974 – to the refugees, the heroic enclaved people in the occupied areas, the relatives of the missing persons and our dead. The solution of the Cyprus problem will represent their own vindication. It will represent the vindication of all of our people.

The talks to resolve the Cyprus problem are at their most critical point in recent years. AKEL’s hope and expectation is that the talks will arrive at a solution that will finally vindicate Cyprus and its people. On this occasion, we address a call to the two leaders to give their best in the negotiations so as the path to achieving a solution is opened up; a solution that will liberate and reunite our country and people and that will create conditions for lasting peace and security in our Cyprus.

Finally, we wish justice, peace and prosperity will prevail throughout the whole world. That’s why it is worth waging all the struggles and making all the sacrifices that a person can make through organized struggle for freedom, democracy, human rights and social justice.

All the best for the New Year and best wishes for Christmas.
