AKEL will submit a comprehensive proposal to the President of the Republic in an effort to prevent new fait accompli and resume negotiations aimed at the solution

Statement by Aristos Damianou, member of the Political Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL, on the Cyprus problem

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 5th December 2020, Nicosia

The confrontation in public over the agreed framework of the solution of bi-zonal, bi-communal Federation with political equality between Mr. Talat, Mr. Akinci and Mr. Tatar underlines the damage the cause of the solution of the Cyprus problem has suffered since the barren fruitless three and a half years that have elapsed since the collapse at Crans Montana. The fact that a large section of the Turkish Cypriot community is resisting Turkey’s unacceptable scheming and Tatar’s rhetoric in favor of a two-state solution sends out a message to all those in the Greek Cypriot community who are dangerously flirting with other solutions, rejecting bi-communal, bi-zonal Federation.

In view of the developments surrounding the Cyprus problem and with the EU Summit in the backdrop, President Anastasiades has to convince the international community, and especially the United Nations, of his readiness to enter into talks, on the basis of the agreed framework of the solution and the convergences agreed so far, from where they were interrupted at Crans Montana, without setting terms and preconditions and without sending out messages questioning political equality, as defined by the UN.

AKEL, seeking to contribute in a positive way to the efforts to prevent new fait accompli and for a resumption of the negotiations aimed at reaching a solution, has elaborated a comprehensive proposal, which it will submit to the President of the Republic. The only way to stop Turkey’s unacceptable, illegal and provocative stance, as well as the plans for the colonalisation of Varosha, is through the resumption of negotiations. Only through negotiations will Turkey really be forced to face up to its responsibilities.
