AKEL WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE PCP AND GUE-NGL SEMINAR IN LISBON

AKEL is participating in a seminar organised jointly by the Portuguese Communist Party PCP and the Group of the European United Left-Nordic Green Left GUE-NGL on the political and economic developments in Europe. The seminar which is being held under the theme “For another Europe of workers and the peoples, of rights, social justice and sovereignty” will take place in Lisbon today Friday 12th April. AKEL is represented by Stavros Evagorou, member of the Political Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL, Member of Parliament who will be one of the keynote speakers at the seminar.

 

Portugal is a country which in recent years is under Memoranda which have been imposed by the Troika and the country’s governments. The people of Portugal have suffered a series of anti-peoples measures which have dramatically downgraded working people’s living standards and labour gains. Today the government is making attempts to impose even constitutional amendments that are abolishing fundamental gains of the workers movement of the country.

 

The struggles of the peoples of Europe against the policies of austerity and economic destitution will be the key theme of the seminar. The current unprecedented ordeal Cyprus is going through and the struggles of its people will be one of the main topics of the debate. In addition, representatives of the French Communist Party PCF and the Communist Party of Spain, along of course with the Portuguese Communist Party, will also speak at the seminar.
