Statement by Stefanos Stefanou, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 18th January 2017, Nicosia
We welcome the reaffirmation of Russia’s readiness to help towards the solution of the Cyprus problem and more specifically with regards its international aspect, as stated by the Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Mr. Lavrov.
AKEL’s position is that the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council must be present in the decision-making procedure for the solution of the international aspect of the Cyprus problem. It is the UN Security Council that must assume the responsibility for the issue of security and the implementation of the solution. As a consequence, it cannot but participate in this procedure. Russia, with its long-standing consistent principled position on the Cyprus problem represents a balancing factor in the efforts to achieve a solution and its active involvement in these efforts is very helpful.
The Government is called upon to work in the direction of utilizing Russia’s interest, as well as the participation of the UN Security Council in the efforts to reach a solution.
