AKEL welcomes the agreement on Confidence building measures

Statement of Stefanos Stefanou, Member of the Secretariat and Political Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 29th May 2015, Nicosia

cpr reunificationAKEL welcomes the agreement for the implementation of Confidence Building Measures (CBM’s) which were agreed between the leaders of the two communities. For sure the CBM’s do not constitute the solution of the Cyprus problem. However, they do help towards the creation of a more favourable climate for a discussion of the core issues of the problem.

Furthermore, we welcome the fact that the two leaders of the two communities have agreed to hold more meetings between them. In the current phase the Cyprus problem is going through, their active, continuous and direct involvement in the negotiations is imperative.

We expect to be informed by the President of the Republic about the results of his meeting yesterday with Mr. Akinci so that we can make a comprehensive assessment.
