AKEL unites its voice in the struggle against homophobia and all forms of discrimination based on sexual identity
AKEL on International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 17 May 2019, Nicosia
17th May has been established as the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. AKEL greets the Day and unites its voice in the struggle against homophobia and against all forms of discrimination – social and institutional – based on sexual identity.
AKEL believes that the rights of LGBTI people must be recognized to each and every one from the moment of birth, like all human rights, and not when and if the rest of society feels mature. Of course, in the world and society we live in, what is just and right is not always identified with the laws of the state and the perceptions of the majority, nor has equality yet become a reality of course. There’s a long way to go and a big struggle needs to be waged at all levels.
As AKEL, we are convinced that, in the end, hatred and conservatism will retreat; that eventually human dignity and solidarity, mutual respect and love, equality and progress will be victorious.
