If we really want to serve the interests of Cyprus and the Cypriot people, we must work to create the preconditions that will enable the reunification of our homeland, stated the General Secretary of AKEL Andros Kyprianou today.
In his statements made during a visit with AKEL’s candidates for the European Parliament elections to the mixed village of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots in Pyla, Mr. Kyprianou expressed his “regret” about “all that is being made public about the session of the National Council.” He explained that “Nicos Anastasiades presented a different version of events with regards the meeting between the Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and the Turkish President, while the mass media is also attempting to present another version of what happened, but mainly by political figures who participated in this session and know well that what was actually said was different.”
He added that “an attempt is underway to underestimate our intelligence” and he referred to “the statements made by EDEK Social democratic party leader Marinos Sizopoulos that there has been a conspiracy by almost all of the Secretariat of the United Nations, including the Secretary-General himself, to supposedly vanish documents, which included positions that were supportive of our own positions.”
The General Secretary of AKEL noted that “this discussion has been going on for a very long time, and we have made it clear from the very beginning that there was only one document in relation to the Guterres framework, which the UN Secretary General himself included in his successive Reports, namely the document of 30th June. Now that the government’s argument is collapsing, an attempt is underway to find conspirators and conspiracies so as to unfortunately cover up the groundlessness of the arguments put forward by the Anastasiades government and the governing DISY party.”
By doing so, he continued, “the well-intentioned interests of our country and people aren’t served. If we really want to serve the interests of Cyprus and the Cypriot people, we must work to create the preconditions that will permit us to reunite our homeland on the basis of the agreed framework.”
As A. Kyprianou said, “AKEL will continue to brief the Cypriot people objectively and correctly precisely because it is interested in the reunification of Cyprus.”
Referring to the visit of AKEL’s candidate MEP’s to Pyla, Mr. Kyprianou said that the election campaign starts from the village of Pyla “because we want to convey a political message, that Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots have an obligation to work together to liberate our common homeland, so that we can offer the possibility to the Cypriot people – and the younger generations in particular -to look to the future with optimism for a better tomorrow and a better life for all Cypriots, Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Armenians, Maronites and Latins. “
