AKEL supports the struggle and demands of doctors in pre-registration practice

11 October 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

AKEL supports the struggle and demands of doctors in pre-registration practice for dignified working hours and wages, who are currently on strike which has been called by their trade union SEIDIK. Doctors in pre-registration practice are trained in public hospitals but at the same time, they provide valuable services to patients. They cannot be treated as a cheap labour force, with degrading pay and inhuman working hours. AKEL will has tabled for an immediate debate to be conducted in the Parliamentary Health Committee on the issue of the working conditions and terms of employment of doctors in pre-registration practice in the country’s public hospitals.

AKEL points out that the treatment of doctors in pre-registration practice is an expression of the general policy being pursued by the ruling DISY party against working people and at the same time it is part of its demeaning of public hospitals and health professionals working in them. Those forces and circles who do not believe in the National Health Scheme (GESY), who have brought public hospitals to their knees as a result of their policies and who have talked in a denigrating and insulting way about nurses and doctors, are a key part of the problem. The government ruling forces neither have, nor are they a solution for the country.
