AKEL supports the One China principle
3 August 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The visit of the President of the US Congress to the Chinese region of Taiwan constitutes a violation of the One China principle. This Principle is based on International Law and the Charter of the United Nations and on which international relations are based on.
The move by the US to go ahead with this visit by the third highest-ranking US official violates the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the People’s Republic of China. It is a provocation to China and escalates tensions both in the Pacific region, as well as globally.
AKEL, knowing first-hand the importance of respecting International Law, the Charter of the UN and in particular the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the states, expresses its support for the One China Principle and calls for de-escalation. Diplomacy must prevail in the interests of peace so that the peoples can walk on the path of development and cooperation.
