AKEL submits Bill Proposal to put an end to the double taxation on fuel

5 May 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

Following the initiatives undertaken by AKEL to confront fuel price increases, the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou, submitted today, on behalf of the AKEL-Left-New Forces Parliamentary Group, a bill proposal to put an end to the double taxation of fuel.

The aim of the proposal is to amend the Value Added Tax Law of 2000 so that VAT is not imposed on the excise duty on petrol and diesel.

This amendment seeks to ensure that the State bears part of the cost of the continuous increases in fuel prices. Moreover, the European Council’ in its guidelines notes the need for measures to be taken to provide further relief for vulnerable consumers and for the provision of support towards European businesses in the short term.

AKEL’s proposal to end double taxation on fuel, together with our proposal for a fuel cap, can make a decisive contribution towards the establishment of a strong safety net for society in the current very difficult conditions. We look forward to forging cooperation with the political forces in Parliament (on the bill proposal).
