AKEL stands in solidarity with the struggle of the Palestinian people against the ongoing occupation and colonisation

On 30 March 1976, the Palestinians in the 1948 territories rose up in mass demonstrations against the illegal confiscations of their land by the Israeli authorities. In memory of all those who lost their lives defending their right to remain on their ancestral lands, Palestinians on this day commemorate “Land Day.”

On the occasion of today’s anniversary, AKEL reiterates its solidarity with the Palestinian people, who continue to suffer the ongoing genocide, the demolitions of their homes, the destruction of infrastructures and expulsion from their land.

As Cypriots, we know from our very own bitter experience the consequences of colonisation, which constitutes a war crime. The policies of annexation and the systematic colonisation of the occupied Palestinian territories in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, as well as the State of Israel’s overt plans to colonise southern Lebanon and new territories it has occupied in Syria, constitute a violation of international law and the resolutions of the UN. The violence perpetrated by the settlers, who systematically and under the protection of the Israeli occupation army uproot olive trees, set homes ablaze, beat and murder Palestinians of all ages, shatters any pretence of Israel’s supporters.

As the entire Middle East region is up in flames as a result of the new U.S.-Israel war launched against Iran, the people are once again paying the price, with the Palestinian people being subjected to all the atrocities being committed by the occupation regime while the spotlight is focused elsewhere.

The key to ending the conflicts, to ensuring peace and stability in the Middle East is the termination of the Israeli occupation and the establishment of an independent and viable Palestinian state on the borders of 4 June 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
