The failure to assign responsibility leaves the Akamas peninsula vulnerable to interference and illegal actions

30 March 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The situation surrounding the Akamas peninsula once again leaves the government exposed. More than two years after the decisions approved by the Council of Ministers, there is a complete absence of any meaningful accountability whatsoever, while the relevant decisions of the state itself remain unenforced.

Three administrative investigations and one criminal investigation remain on the Minister of Agriculture’s desk, while extremely serious allegations of violations of environmental conditions and procedures remain unanswered and without responsibilities being assigned.

The lack of transparency naturally raises many questions and intensifies concerns that Akamas, one of Cyprus’ most environmentally significant areas, remains vulnerable to interventions and illegal actions.

Environmental protection and the sustainable management of the area are the state’s obligation and a demand of society itself. And the government must provide a clear answer:

  • Why are the decisions it itself has taken not being implemented?
  • Who is responsible for the existing situation?
  • Why is information concerning the public interest being withheld?

AKEL calls on the government to make all relevant findings public and to ensure the effective protection of Akamas by reassessing the projects based on everything that had been announced. The continuation of the current situation is not merely a sign of the government’s weakness. It is a deliberate policy choice with serious consequences for the environment and the public interest.
