AKEL replies to Lillikas’ accusations of pressure and distortion

Resorting to lies bears witness to Lillikas’ panicking due to the poor response to his candidacy

Statement by Stefanos Stefanou, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 18th September 2017, Nicosia

Mr. Lillikas has recently joined those accusing AKEL of allegedly putting pressure on Mr. Anastasiades to accept a solution with guarantees and rights of intervention. Resorting to lies bears witness to Mr. Lillikas’ panicking due to the poor response to his candidacy is receiving.

As in the 2013 presidential elections, Mr. Lillikas now claims that he alone can confront Mr. Anastasiades. Citizens, however, wonder that since Mr. Lillikas wants Mr. Anastasiades to go – who must go – why did he in the second round of the 2013 presidential elections chose to adopt the stand of subtle neutrality, which helped Mr. Anastasiades to be elected?

Mr. Lillikas claims that his statements have been distorted. For his bad luck, his morning statements were broadcast midday. Unfortunately for him, however, the writings and transcript remain. Mr. Lillikas did indeed accuse the General Secretary of AKEL Andros Kyprianou of exerting pressure on Mr. Anastasiades to accept guarantees.

In relation to what he later said about AKEL, that the Party supposedly accuses Mr. Anastasiades of being responsible for the deadlock, nor does that apply. Turkey has the responsibility. AKEL criticizes Mr. Anastasiades because, due to his erroneous handlings on the Cyprus problem, he has allowed Turkey to provoke a deadlock without being apportioned any responsibility whatsoever.
