AKEL replies to DIKO and “Solidarity Movement” positions

Statement by Stefanos Stefanou, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 14th March 2017, Nicosia

cc AKEL ezekiaIt’s ludicrous for the leadership of the Democratic Party (DIKO) to accuse the General Secretary of AKEL that he is on a common course with Mr. Anastasiades and the leadership of DISY.

It is the leadership of the Democratic Party that elected Mr. Anastasiades to the Presidency.

It is the leadership of DIKO that supported and propped up the neoliberal policies of the government and ruling forces.

It is the leadership of DIKO that has made negativity and nihilism into a science.

Everything that the DIKO leadership has said about the General Secretary of AKEL belong to the realm of fantasy, which is why we consider it unworthy of us to reply.

AKEL and its General Secretary are struggling to achieve a solution of the Cyprus problem that will liberate and reunite our country and people. We shall continue this struggle because our own concern is the future generations.

Evidently, others are more interested in the Presidential Elections. Let people judge each and every one of us.

On the “Solidarity Movement”

It doesn’t surprise us why the “Solidarity Movement” wonders what the President of the Republic will say to Akinci. The ones wondering are those who have never bothered to think that the Cyprus problem will be solved through dialogue with our Turkish Cypriot compatriots. Those wondering are the ones who never made the effort to think what the consequences of stagnation and the collapse of the negotiations will mean.

Without dialogue and negotiation a solution cannot be achieved. AKEL isn’t comfortable with partition, which is a source of disaster for our country.
