AKEL C.C. Press Office, 15th February 2020, Nicosia
A delegation of AKEL participated today in the Congress of the Association of the Turkish Cypriot Martyrs for Democracy held at the offices of the Turkish Cypriot Revolutionary Trade Unions Federation (DEV-IS) in occupied Nicosia. The Congress was preceded by the laying of carnations and wreaths at the graves of the fallen for their political beliefs.
The Association was formed in memory of the Turkish Cypriots murdered for their political beliefs from the 1950’s up to the 1990’s in both Cyprus and Turkey. These include, among others, the assassinated Turkish Cypriot Left militants and members of the class-based Pancyprian Federation of Labour PEO (1958), Dervis Ali Kavazoglou, a member of the Central Committee of AKEL (1965), the murdered Turkish Cypriot members of the left Turkish Cypriot student organization KOGEF in Turkey (late 1970’s) and the journalist of the progressive newspaper “Yeni Duzen” Kutlu Andali (1996).
Representatives of PEO, EDON Youth Organisation and the Association of Relatives of the Murdered of 1955-59 (Note: Organisation of the relatives of the numerous Greek Cypriot militants and members of AKEL, PEO and the People’s Movement of the Left who were murdered and assassinated 1955-59) also participated in the Congress.
