AKEL on World Environment Day 2022

5 June 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

This year’s World Environment Day finds our island and the whole world in a dire situation.

The ongoing war, the rising prices of basic goods, poverty and the deterioration of the quality of life, as well as the energy crisis are not unconnected with the environmental and climate crisis.

Extreme temperatures increase the need for energy for cooling and heating and natural disasters cost billions.

World Environment Day reminds us that the road ahead is long and there is much to be done.  Conditions demand policies and initiatives to improve our daily lives and secure the future.

In Cyprus, for the last nine years the Environment has been under severe attack by the Anastasiades-DISY government. The people are paying on a daily basis the price for the absence of a comprehensive policy on energy and the development of renewable energy sources.

The cost of the lack of a coherent spatial planning is paid for by residents of specific areas who are burdened daily with pollutants and fumes.

The licensing of developments to serve big private capital in the construction sector leads to the destruction of important habitats, protected areas and beaches.

World Environment Day this year, more than ever before, confirms the need for policies that should aim to restore the ecosystem, protect the environment, and promote environmental and social justice.

AKEL is ready to make its own contribution in every way to this struggle.
