AKEL on Turkey’s new illegal actions

Turkey’s new illegal actions this time in the sea area south of Kastelorizo and southeast of Crete represent a dangerous escalation of Turkey’s aggression, which of course is part of the Erdogan government’s overall strategy. The situation that is developing harbors great dangers for the peoples, for peace in the region.
The international community cannot remain inactive in the face of Turkey’s provocative actions that are threatening the entire Eastern Mediterranean. The US, NATO and the EU, setting as their ultimate goal keeping Turkey in the Western camp, are ignoring Turkey’s illegal actions without reacting in any substantial way. An overall policy based on international law, on the law of the sea, the respect for the sovereignty and sovereign rights of all the states in the region is demanded.
The Cypriot government is called upon to make use of the processes that are underway with regards EU-Turkish relations seeking the checking of Turkish aggression and promotion of our people’s goal, which is none other than the termination of the Turkish occupation and our homeland’s division. The solution of the Cyprus problem based on the agreed framework can also contribute towards the solution of the region’s other problems.
