AKEL will take its final decision with regards the upcoming 2023 presidential elections in the beginning of June, the Party’s press spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas said speaking to ‘Astra’ radio this morning.
The AKEL C.C. Spokesperson explained that the Central Committee of the Party will convene in the coming days, which will prepare a specific document including a recommendation on the person or persons who can be supported as Presidential candidates, as well as on the programmatic positions, while a discussion will follow in the Party’s grassroots organisations, to which, in addition to Party members, friends of the Party will also be invited.
The Central Committee of AKEL will then meet again for a final evaluation, and a final proposal will be formulated which will subsequently be put before the Pancyprian Party Conference where the final decision will be taken.
Asked whether AKEL does indeed have the candidacies of Andreas Mavroyiannis and Achilleas Demetriades on the table, G.Koukoumas said that, respecting the people who will participate in the party’s procedures, he wouldn’t say anything more on the matter and that the party wants its members to express their views freely in the debates that will take place.
The AKEL Spokesperson made it clear that given that AKEL wants change, it will for that precise reason not support any of the ruling DISY party candidates, namely DISY President Averof Neophytou and former Foreign Minister in the DISY government Nikos Christodoulides.
As far as the social democratic EDEK party is concerned, Giorgos Koukoumas stressed that AKEL’s doors are open to everyone and pointed out that for cooperation to be forged, there must first and foremost be convergences recorded on programmatic principles/positions.
