AKEL ON THE OPENING OF THE FENCED OFF AREA OF FAMAGUSTA

AKEL C.C. Press Office Spokesperson, Georgios Loucaides

AKEL, as well as the entire political leadership, supports the opening of the fenced off area of Famagusta in line with the resolutions 541 and 550 of the Security Council of the United Nations, aiming at the return of the lawful inhabitants of the city to their homes and properties.

Accordingly, we have supported the relevant proposal submitted by the previous government of Demetris Christofias within the framework of the “three package proposal”, on the basis of which the return of Varosha with the simultaneous functioning of the port of Famagusta under the aegis of the European Union is provided for, a development that would give the possibility for the opening of chapters in Turkey’s accession negotiations.

In view of the mobility being observed on the issue and the relevant statements made by the Foreign Minister Mr. Casoulides, as AKEL we consider it imperative that there should be a comprehensive briefing of the National Council, so that a collective analysis, but also promotion of any decisions taken should be made.

We once again stress that a possible return of the fenced off area of Famagusta to its inhabitants will constitute a decisive step towards the comprehensive overall solution of the Cyprus problem.
