AKEL on the need to resume negotiations

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 10th February 2018, Nicosia

In an interview to the Greek “TA NEA” newspaper, Mr. Anastasiades stressed the need for the resumption of the talks within the designated framework, pointing out that the danger of partition is becoming more visible as long as there is stagnation surrounding the Cyprus problem.

The UN Secretary-General has predetermined quite clearly under what conditions dialogue can resume. We must remain consistent to the procedure and principles of the solution of the Cyprus problem. Regressions may again offer Turkey the opportunity to put forth new demands that will lead to a protracted stalemate. And as Mr. Anastasiades notes after the elections, a protracted stalemate means the finalization of partition.

The withdrawal of the map by the Turkish Cypriot side, but also the announcement of the withdrawal of Anastasiades’ proposals that were submitted in Crans Montana complicates and already constitutes a setback for the procedure, bringing a protracted deadlock nearer. And then Mr. Anastasiades points out what this means.
