AKEL on the nationalistic slogans shouted by the Home Guard – slogans which led to the 1974 tragedy and destruction

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 26 March 2019, Nicosia

The nationalist slogans shouted by Home Guard members during a parade held by the municipality of Latsia raise questions for the Cypriot government and state. It’s one thing for any organized groups slogans to shout slogans and it’s quite another matter for a coordinated body of the National Guard shouting them, which is controlled by the government of the country through the Ministry of Defense. “Cyprus is Greek” was one of the slogans that led to the tragedy and destruction of 1974. Forty-five years later, the state is still trying to reverse the disaster caused by these slogans and the behaviors that accompanied them.

We await to learn what the government and the Ministry of Defense intend to do about the issue.
