AKEL ON THE DESECRATION OF A MOSQUE IN DENIA VILLAGE AND THE ATTEMPT TO CAUSE UNREST IN THE VILLAGE

Press Office of the C.C. of AKEL, 22nd January 2013, Nicosia

AKEL condemns the cowardly enemies of Cyprus who acting under the cover of darkness desecrated a Turkish Cypriot religious site in the village of Denia. The nationalists are once again trying to separate rather than unite. The local community of Denia and the whole of Cyprus have condemned them for the hatred of their rhetoric, but also their actions. These actions and rhetoric give an excuse to nationalist circles in Turkey and within the Turkish Cypriot community to project their actions as supposedly proof that our people, Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots, cannot live together in a free, independent and united homeland.

AKEL again sounds the alarm about the chauvinist and fascist danger, since the well-known circles are trying through empty slogans to attract a section of the youth people, unemployed and the poor. We must never allow intolerance and fascism to raise its head again in our country.

AKEL calls on the political parties to denounce the moral instigators of these actions. They should remove from their political practice any actions and proposals which foster and nurture blind fanaticism. We call upon the mass media to play a constructive role in this necessity.

We assure that AKEL will intensify its efforts to ensure that the chauvinistic fascist elements are isolated.
