AKEL on the anniversary of the proclamation of the illegal pseudo-state

35 years ago, in 1983, Rauf Denktash proclaimed the illegal pseudo-state. This constituted a decisive step by Turkey towards the partition of Cyprus. Despite the international condemnation, highlighted in particular in United Nations Security Council Resolutions 541 (1983) and 550 (1984), the occupation and its consequences are continuing.
Thirty-five years after the declaration of the illegal pseudo-state and forty-four years since the 1974 Turkish invasion, our homeland continues to be divided and de facto partitioned. Bearing these facts in mind, what reason and patriotism determine as imperative is the steadfast commitment to the goal of reaching a solution that liberates and reunites the country and the people. It is the consistent and determined pursuit of this solution on the basis of what has already been agreed between the two communities and the UN.
Experience has shown that the unproductive passage of time has a very negative effect on the prospect of a solution to the Cyprus problem and makes it an even more difficult problem. This is why AKEL stresses that, at this very decisive moment we are going through today, the President of the Republic should focus on the efforts to agree on the terms of reference so that the negotiations can resume. The UN Secretary-General, in his recent Report on the Cyprus problem, underlines that time is running out and that everyone needs to move forward with a sense of urgency. That is what we call on President Anastasiades to do.
AKEL stresses that the unwavering goal remains the liberation and reunification of Cyprus. This can only be achieved through a solution of a bicommunal, bizonal federation with political equality, as described in the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, with the safeguarding of a single sovereignty, a single international personality and a single citizenship. This is the only way to reverse the partitionist fait accompli
On the occasion of the anniversary of the proclamation of the pseudo-state, AKEL is organizing an anti-occupation meeting today, Thursday 15 November 2018, at the “Orfeas” checkpoint adjacent to the UN buffer zone in Nicosia at 19:00 p.m. The keynote speaker at the event will be the General Secretary of the CC of AKEL Andros Kyprianou.
